The Paseo del Arte, as it is known to the group of museums formed by the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum and the Thyssen Museum, among others, and that since 2021 has been declared World Heritage Site. We now have a new museum there: the Belgian Serreria Cultural Space.
The Madrid City Council has just approved the launching of this new of this new cultural space. The center, managed by the Department of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the City Council, was created with the intention of becoming the new exhibition venue of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MMAC), which will enhance the value of the municipal art collection, in addition to becoming a a place of innovation and encounter between the cultural sector and public institutions,
A place open to citizen participation and cooperation to develop projects based on innovation and new technologies applied to culture. All this without forgetting at any time its links with the city, as there will also be room for national and international exhibitions related to Madrid and its history.
The building, at 15 Alameda Street, is the only functioning municipal cultural building in the Paseo del Prado area. Built in the early twentieth century, it is one of the few examples of industrial architecture that remain in the center of Madrid, and operated as a sawmill until the 1970s, hence the name Serrería Belga, which recovers the original.
Did you know that… Its structure was one of the first in the city of reinforced concrete with exposed pillars, which allows the building to have huge windows and large open spaces, perfect for the exhibitions planned inside.
Its opening, scheduled for this year, will strengthen Madrid as a creative and avant-garde city, in addition to completing the offer of the Art Walk, which is already the largest museum concentration in the world.
